Burnout Paradise: The Ultimate Box (2009/ENG)

Burnout Paradise (formerly known as Burnout 6) by Criterion Games is the seventh game in the Burnout video game series. It was released in January 2008 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. It was also released on the PlayStation Store in September 2008 and will be available on Microsoft Windows from February 2009. It has an open world set in the fictional Paradise City, with no loading times and no traditional online lobbies or game menus. The song "Paradise City" by Guns N' Roses is the game's title music and also featured on the in-game soundtrack.

You're in control of one of 70+ vehicles as you drive from event to event in Paradise City, a sprawling world seemingly devoid of pedestrians. As you succeed in different events, you'll gain points on your Paradise City driver's license, which starts at "D" grade and evolves all the way to the "Burnout" license. Events range from long races to aggressive bouts like Road Rage, in which you've got a limited amount of time to smash rival cars and take them out of commission.
The beauty of The Ultimate Box is that it's a decidedly refined experience compared to the game that console players unwrapped last year. PC gamers won't have to experience the small inconveniences of the original game. Case in point: Prior to this release, console versions of Paradise had few visual indicators for collectible landmarks like smashable billboards and big jump stunt ramps. The Ultimate Box makes it a lot easier to spot these milestones with visual cues. Billboards glow red, while stunt jumps have glowing blue traffic cones. Plus, any smashes or stunts you perform in the middle of an event count toward your overall achievement tally. It's the equivalent of killing two birds with one stone.

The Ultimate Box is also a great-looking title compared to its console counterparts. Paradise still looks great on an HDTV, but the PC version looks just amazing on our test desktop. If you've got the rig to run it, small details such as car logos and the print on the tires look even clearer than before. I played through the game using an Xbox 360 gamepad; it's possible to use a keyboard and mouse, but the game feels optimized for a controller, from the drive/reverse controls to the online configuration, which is designed for a few easy taps on the d-pad. My time online felt just like a round on Xbox Live or PlayStation Network; that is, it's just as easy to jump in and out of multiplayer games as in those versions.

In spite of its tardiness compared to the console versions, it's hard to complain too much about The Ultimate Box, considering that it comes packaged with solutions to many of Burnout Paradise's initial launch problems. Those fixes include a refined difficulty curve, the ability to restart races, a rich secondary game featuring motorcycles, and the aforementioned visual indicators for collectible milestones. It's also a great-looking title that functions just as effectively as its console counterparts. I've got to admit that I won't be investing much time in the Party Pack, which enables offline multiplayer for you and eight friends, but at least it offers you the option (and it's free on PC). When one considers the lackluster quality of many console-to-PC ports these days, it's truly refreshing to see an experience that comes jam-packed with so many bells and whistles and such exceptional visuals. If you're a PC gamer who's never burned out, Burnout Paradise: The Ultimate Box serves as a fine introduction to the series.
